A controverscial and mysterious woman, Mary Magdelene has been described as a prostitute, a whore, a woman of questionable character that was saved and redeemed by Jesus. But was this really the case? History tells us no. The image of this amazing woman has been corrupted, sexualized, and distorted through history. Biblical and historical evidence tell us that Mary was from the town of Magdala on the west coast of the Sea of Galilee. It was likely that she was a woman of means and the New Testament references that she provided for Jesus and his disciples.
Rather than reduce her to her sexuality, it's important to note that Jesus loved women equally as he did men. She was not less than because she was a woman. In fact, she is an example of fortitude, courage, and generosity. She was present at the crucifixion, unlike many of Jesus' disciples. She was the first person to seek Jesus' body at the tomb and it was to her that Jesus first appeared. A woman! Further, Jesus commissioned Mary first to announce that he had risen from the grave. She was an apostle to the apostles!
*Part of the proceeds from Mary Magdelene will go toward the Unchained Survivor Scholarship fund. Unchained is an organization dedicated to ending human trafficking. Scholarship funds go directly to a survivor of human trafficing.
