Venus Laurel, from "Mothers"
Mixed media on canvas 36 x 36 x 3/4" Gallery wrapped profile. Part of the Mothers Series. A 25,000 relief sculpture, the original was carved into the limestone of a rock shelter in France. The figure holds a crescent moon notched with thirteen markings: the number of lunar cycles in a year. Her other hand points to her vagina, showing the correlation to women’s menstrual cycles. Reminiscent of the cave paintings at nearby Lascaux, you can see the ox, arrows, and geometric shapes consistent with the Upper Paleo era. This series pays homage and seeks to capture the magnificent miracle of female fertility, birth, sexuality, and maternity in a time where Women's rights, our bodies, and the status of motherhood and sexuality are in question.
